The firebox is where the fire burns.
It’s usually made of brick or stone and has a metal grate on the bottom to hold the wood or coal. Above the firebox is the damper, which is a metal plate that opens and closes to let air in and control how much smoke goes up the chimney.
The throat is the narrowest part of the chimney and it’s where most of the drafting happens.

Atop the flue is the cap, which keeps rain, snow, animals, and debris from getting into your chimney.
The crown is at the very top of the chimney and it helps shed water away from masonry so that it doesn’t erode over time.
